Landscape, hardscape, retaining wall, pool, paving and foundation contractors work directly with soil. Many GL policies written for those trades, especially in surplus lines, carry an earth movement or subsidence exclusion. If a wall leans, a patio settles or a slope slides and damages property, the claim may fall squarely inside that exclusion.

The exclusion is easy to miss because it sits among a long list of endorsements, and the client usually thinks of it as a property issue, not a liability one.

The short version

For any contractor whose work holds back, sits on or moves soil, read the earth movement wording on the GL quote before you bind. It can remove coverage for the claim the client is most likely to have.
