ATVs, UTVs (side-by-sides), and dirt bikes fall into a gap that surprises a lot of owners. They aren't ordinary cars, and they aren't reliably covered by a home policy once they leave your yard. Most are insured on a separate specialty or recreational vehicle policy.

What an off-road policy typically offers

  • Liability — for injuries or property damage you cause to others while riding
  • Collision — damage to your machine from an accident or rollover
  • Comprehensive — theft, fire, vandalism, and similar non-collision losses
  • Accessories — coverage for added equipment like winches, racks, or custom parts (often optional)

Why the homeowners policy isn't enough

A homeowners policy may provide very limited coverage for these vehicles only while they're on your own property, and often only for liability — not physical damage. The moment the machine is ridden on trails, public land, a friend's property, or anywhere off-premises, that home-policy coverage typically disappears. For real protection while actually riding, a dedicated policy is the right tool.

Tip for clients

Riders who haul their machines to trailheads or ride on shared land should not assume they're covered. Confirm liability limits and whether physical damage applies off-premises before the season starts.
