A tradesperson's tools are their income. When a truck is broken into overnight and the tools are gone, the client calls expecting full coverage. Often what they find is a small per-item limit, a theft condition they didn't meet, or no coverage at all because the tools were never on an inland marine policy.

Tools and small equipment usually need their own coverage. The personal auto policy doesn't cover business tools, and a business property policy may only cover a small amount away from the premises.

The short version

Ask how tools are covered, the per-item limit, and exactly what the theft-from-vehicle condition requires. Those three answers decide most tool claims.
